My son and I have a 56 F100 that I would like to put back together, but have just not got to it. I have always thought that the 302 with fuel injection and overdrive automatic would be what I would put in it. I have experience with the 302 FI and the 351 with the infamous variable venturi carb in Crown Victorias. The smaller engine with FI wins hands down: better power, accelleration, starting AND fuel economy. Also the FI engines seemed to last much longer. These engines also were in the Mustangs, possibly with a bit more horsepower. There should be lots of them in the junkyards, I would think.

If you are not concerned with keeping your Ford all Ford, the small block Chevy is about the cheapest engine you can find to build up, if that is your thing. Lots of factory and aftermarket speed equipment out there at the lowest prices of any engine. Fuel injection is also available, with the same advantages.

What ever you do, I also would suggest upgrading the suspension and brakes. Those brakes were not great 50 years ago and today really present a hazard.

Plan on spending some money. No swap, or for that matter rebuild can be done well on the cheap. I hope to get my project going one of these years. Good luck!
