1974 Ford Truck

Have this old truck that is a 10 wheeler and a cabover.
5 speed with 2 speed rear.
The question---it likes to come out of gear while driving doesn't seem to be much resistance on the shifter.
Is this because it is a cabover. It has the Spicer tranny.
