I suspect that electronic ignition was added to your engine and that the module in the distributor has gone out. Bob has you on the right track to check for spark.

I have a strong dislike for electronic ignition even if it is better WHEN WORKING. A foil gum wrapper placed on severely burned points can get you going again, but there is little hope for getting a stalled HEI equiped vehicle going again at the roadside. Just my personal opinion however.
