My 3 speed did the same thing a few years back after I had the clutch replaced
Pull the driveshaft, this will allow the main shaft to spin freely and then as you turn the mainshaft with one hand move the shift levers with the other. you can also try rocking the mainshaft back and forth as you put tension on the shifting arms. Your mechanic may have had the arms in the wrong position when the trans was reinstalled. Sounds like it was not road tested.
