Boy, I like the idea of a "stout" 312 in there. You could fool most people into thinking it was the stock '54 239!! I had a '57 Police "interceptor" engine from a '57 NYS trooper car years ago; what a bear that was! I would guess that 312s are a bit rare today and probably a lot "pricey". A nice 292 would be a good second choice and still fairly available. I have a good F.I. 302 for which I can hopefully find a shortbox Ford to "stick it into" someday. I also have a T-85/R-11 O.D. to go along with it. I think (with 3.70 or 3.89 gears) this would make a good combination for power, speed and economy.
