I would consider putting in a 360 LA engine for a bit more power and torque, as well as availability. There are lots of them out there. I think the LA engine would bolt up in place of your A 318, but you need a different flywheel to use the 360, as it is externally balanced. For use in a hauling truck, you want to keep the compression ratio fairly low and the camshaft mild for good low end torque and to avoid detonation.
I would try to get a 4 barrel manifold and carb, for a little more power and believe it or not, fuel economy. The 360 2 barrel carbs were big and thirsty.
If the rest of your Dodge is in good shape, I would sure keep it. They don't build them that tough any more! And very simple and easy to work on too. Have fun!
