Since you are looking for used.

You will have better luck with a 429 than a 460. The C6 is a very good choice. The E4OD is good also, but if it were used as a tow rig before, the transmission wears out after about 140,000 miles. Skip anything with Ford 8.8" rear end.

The Ford Diesels have their problems, and are expensive to fix. But the one based on the 429 block was the better one relatively speaking.

Also too, Replace the ignition switch (electrical portion down on the column)- Ford used an unstable plastic on this and also ran unfused 12 straight from the battery into that switch, and internally that lug is 1/16 inch or less from a grounded lug. If you have ever welded- you know the result. Ford resisted recalling all affected F series trucks on this one. I am quite sure when mine had the small fire (compared to most), that triggered the US recall.
