Re: Best Ford F-350 tow rig? Diesel or 460V8?Posted by Hal/WA on June 16, 2005 at 14:18:03 from (148.65.0.200): In Reply to: Best Ford F-350 tow rig? Diesel or 460V8? posted by Doug on June 15, 2005 at 20:05:40: I like my 84 F250 4x4 with a factory 460 and C-6, both of which had been rebuilt shortly before I bought the truck 8 years ago. It has pulled all sorts of things without a whimper or a breakdown for all the time I have had it. I would not brag about the mileage, which is about 10 or 11 unloaded and down from there loaded heavily. My truck has an AFB carb, which was put on after the original Holley wore out and I priced the Holley replacement. I use the 4x4 feature, as we have snowy winters here some years and always have to deal with a bunch of mud in the Spring. I do not like the "twin I beam" split front axle very much as the turning circle is very wide. I would prefer a solid axle 4x4, which I think only came on 1 tons. However, if a person doesn't need 4x4, having it only adds weight and a bunch of things to go wrong. If you don't need it, I would suggest not getting 4 wheel drive. I have thought I would like a diesel, but currently the price of diesel fuel is higher than premium gas and the added cost of getting a diesel adds a bunch to the price of buying one. And rebuilding a diesel and injector pump is several times what it costs to rebuild a gas engine and carb. I think it would take a long time for me to ever come out financially on a diesel, new or used. So at this time, I guess I will stick with my old Ford and put up with the gasoline cost. Good luck, hope I have helped!
