Re: what motor for my truck?Posted by John McPherson on June 20, 2005 at 15:33:58 from (216.251.170.39): In Reply to: what motor for my truck? posted by Phillip Howard on June 20, 2005 at 11:09:39: They will all give about the same mileage. Drawback on the 302 is that it probably will need new engine bearings if it has more than 120,000. Slow the idle speed down ancheck the idiot light, or guage. You will start to hear a knock from the lower end and the idiot light will flash to the knock, or the guage will bounce to the knock. You can get more miles out of the engine in this condition, but just don't try to turn fast ET's as you will probably kill a rod journal. Most Ford v8's hit the copper cladding of the bearings at about 120,000, or sooner if the oil changes were not 3000 miles on a regular basis. 302 is fairly cheap to rebuild, as is the 360, but if you have the 351Cleveland/Modified, expect a bit more as these usually eat cranks too. If you got the 351W, it is essentially a taller 302. 302 however gives you more modernization options to ignition, and transmissions that can be hidden to maintain the original look as much as possible.
