Diesel option in 1970's Chevy's?

I was told that GMC/Chevy offred a diesel option in older trucks. My friend said there were not very many made and they were a Detroit 4-53 engine. Can anyone confirm this? I thought the 6.2 or the old 350 diesel was the first diesel option and made in the 1980s.
