The ignition switch- electrical portion down near the floor is likely worn out. Next time the "no cool" happens, try rotating the key back and forth a little bit, not enough to shut the engine off, but enough to "rock" the worn parts together to make contact. The AC should start working. On a truck that old, just checking out the wires is not at all a bad idea, there might be some issue developing that you can catch before it becomes a problem.
