No you don't need thread sealer on those type of fittings. The only reason would be if you wanted to take them apart later, then you could use someting like loctite teflon thread sealer. Many experienced mechanics, swear by gravity bleeding, and in fact use it all of the time. With new cars, with antilock brakes, you have too draw the fluid out, with a vacuum pump, and should not bleed with pedal pressure. On your truck, gravity bleeding should work good. I don't think that you need to elevate the front of the truck, it could be level, as mentioned before, keep the master cylinder full.
