shimming starter

i recently installed a new flexplate and new starter on my 75 chevy p/u.now,it was working fine without shims,now it's grinding,i bought a diagonal shim kit for it.which bolt gits the shim the outside bolt,inside bolt or both? i have tried both to no avail ,would appreciate any help you could offer.thank you.....oh by the way i'm running 350 engine.
