Mark, If your starter makes a high-pitched whine when the engine starts, you need to shim the starter. You can get them at most parts houses. Begin by adding one at a time, till it starts without making any unusual noise. The shims come in different thicknesses, so begin with the thin one first, then take that out and add the thick one, then both, if necessary. If it makes more of a loud grinding noise, then then you have too much space, take out a shim. Also, be sure to get the right kind of shim. Chevy starters could use straight shims or offset. Look at the bolt layout on the starter to tell. If the bolts are straight across from each other, use the straight shims. If they are diagonal, use the offset shims. One more thing. You don't have to remove the starter to add shims. You can remove the outer bolt and loosen the inner one enough to slip the shims in. That will save you a lot of work. Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy
