Why not swap in a much more modern drivetrain from an 70's -80's Blazer ? You get all the benefits of improved brakes,steering, suspension, etc.
If you still want to go the diesel route, the GM diesel engines like the 5.7, 6.2 , 6.5 and 6.5 turbo are all nearly a direct bolt up to the blazer or short bed pick up drive train. Parts are also easy to find cheap too.
