chevy altenator

I just bought an 1968 C10 custom. The boy had put a new alt. (4 wire) on. He must have done it wrong. My lights go dim at idle and will blow out when reved up. He is running from the alt.(4 wires) to the voltage reg.? doesn,t the alt. have it's own reg? Are there any wireing diagrams out there for a conversion from the old generator to a 4 wire altenator? any help would be of great help. thanks mike
