Removing stake pockets

I was considering filling the stake pockets on my '64 Chev. Has anyone done this? I was wondering what you would think about completely removing the braces (stake pockets)? This would provide an "Ultra" smooth look on top of the bed rails and on the inside. The shape of the sides of the box sure look like they would be rigid enough to do this. Anyway, looking for opinions.
