It is probable that is one very likely cause if it was a new pump.

If the pump is older, I would first do a compression leak down tes on each cylinder to make sure that a blown head gasket is not a cause. Also it does pay to pull the water pump out if there is a question considering the symptoms, the impeller might be eroded, or it may have come loose- I have seen both happen.
