I own a 98 F-150 shortbed, with the v-6, 4.2 engine and 5 speed tranny. In 53k miles, have replaced the front brake pads, rotors cut, new plug wires,(motorcraft wires are supposed to have high core failure), new tires, new plugs, and thats it. Excellent running truck, but the v-6 is raucous, as described by consumer reports. I bought this truck new. It has no a/c although now it is standard. Plenty of trucks and parts are available, I think they sold 800,000 f series trucks in 98. Check out www.f-150online .com for comments. (not sure on exact website, but do a search and you will find it.) In short, i would buy another one. Good luck.
