1964 Chevy pickup

my uncle has a 1964 chevy stepside pickup with a long box. we've been wondering why the rear bumper is shaped like it is, normal on the left side with an indent on the right...we've been asking around to all the old farmers and no one seems to know why, so i was hoping someone here would.
