50 chevy electrical system questions

My son got his truck to run this weekend but needs advice on wiring harnesses. Is it better to buy one and from whom? We could use a diagram to make it ourselves. Second problem, we have a late 50's motor so need an inverter to run instrunments from 6 volt rather than the 12 volt that the motor starts and charges from. Where do you wire the inverter at? I know I have to not be between the regulator and the generator but need to hear some advice. We have to replace gas tank sending unit I think too. Should I convert all to a 12 v system? Thanks for your help.
