Looking for 70's Grain Truck

Posted by pbutler on August 24, 2005 at 09:49:52 from (199.249.176.251):

I started farming 2 years ago (only 160 acres) and have been doing all my hauling with wagons. Elevator is 4 miles away and going to 250 acres next year I think it is time to jump to a truck.

With a pretty limited budget I am thinking something in the 300-400bu size-16ft bed? I have been to a few auctions in our area and see a lot of early to mid 70's era Chevy C65s for 4,000-5,000. I think that is what I want-or a comparable Ford of similar age, price, size. Ford, Chevy, or Dodge-doesn't make a difference to me.

I think for my mechanical ability I don't want a Diesel. I think air brakes are better but I really don't know much about them and the though of repair bills skew me away from them a bit.

3 Questions:
1) What would be a comparable Ford or Dodge to the C65?

2) What are your thoughts on air brakes? Definately avoid or a must have? How hard to work on.

3) I know what to look for on tractors and combines but what are the key things I should be looking for when evaluating a truck at an auction?

Any input would be much appreciated!
