I believe originally, it would have had an "E"-core square coil with a push-on connector, rather than a round-can coil with (+) and (-) terminals, which is what it sounds like you have. When a coil has (+) and (-) terminals, generally the (-) terminal DOES NOT go to ground. It goes to the breaker points (if so equppied) on a (-) ground system, or to the electronic module (if so equipped). If it is an electronic ignition system with ESC (electronic spark control), without a vacuum advance connister on the distributor and centrifugal advance weights, you will have no spark advance, leading to poor economy and lack of power without the "black box" ESC unit.
