Actually the plugs ar not through the covers, They are up on the intake side. At least on the 5.4. It should have individual coils and are next to the injectors. A small screw holds the coil in place. The coil has the plug boot on it. Disconnect the wiring connector, remove the screw and the coil lifts out. The plugs are pretty deep down. Use a good socket and extension that locks together well.
The right rear plug is a bear to get to.
