Don't be embaressed about your idea. Heck, I have a 29 Ford closed cab pickup with a 400 inch Chevy in it and it's a lot of fun! Had it for 25 years! Why a diesel? You could purchase a GM crate engine for $1200.00, install a 700R-4 overdrive behind it, reap the benefits of the mileage and not have to listen to that noisy diesel! As a matter of fact, there are kits available for all kinds of engine/trans combo's for early Chevy trucks. Speedway Motors in Lincoln, Nebraska has all kinds of cool stuff like that. Check em' out.
