jd jim, This system is IMO one of the better system GM made. It allowed The opition of having a Low-2 opition, without havein to engageing the 4x4 porition.
My old 80 3/4 ton 4x4 didn't have that transfer case. So for me to have a low 2....I had to leave my hubs in the FREE position and simply pull the transfer case into 4 low. i used this checking cattle, driveing fence, getting heavy loads moveing. etc, etc.
Other than that position on your transfer case it work just like any other 4x4 system. Hope this helps.
