If I remember correctly, a 47 half ton uses a closed driveline rear end. If it does, you have to use a transmission with the socket for the closed driveline to fit into. I don't think your later 4 speed has the socket.

I would use the 283 and later 4 speed you have and change the rear end. I don't know if the rear end from the 65 is the right width, but since you have it, I would sure look it over. Other favorite choices would be a Ford 9 inch from a car or Bronco or a MoPar 8 3/4 incher. Then have a custom driveshaft made. They are not too expensive to have done RIGHT.

There is nothing wrong with a 283. They were a fine smaller engine. They are just getting a little harder to find the correct parts for, as they have not been in production since about 67 or 68. There are millions of 350's out there and were produced until just a few years ago. The 350 is supposed to be the cheapest engine to rebuild. If you use the 283, use the side mounts and if you want to put in a 350 later, it will be a snap. Your bell housing, clutch and flywheel should bolt up to most 350's, but make sure with an expert before you buy.

You need to get better brakes. The stock ones on the 47 will SCARE you, even if they are operating like they were designed to. Street Rodder and Rod & Custom have both had articles about converting to disc brakes recently. There are also books about engine swapping and the various systems that need to be upgraded.

Do a good, safe, well thought out job and you will have a reliable fun ride that is not like everyone else's. Do a half-@#$$%^ job and you will hate it. Good luck.
