If this truck has lockouts and an automatic transmission most likely a part time 4wd kit was installed. There were many kits available and some certainly better than others. The common thread for the kits was engagement. When in H or L range it will be in 2 wd, when the lever is in HL,High Lock or LL, Low lock it engages the center differential in the transfer case and gives you 4wd.
