261 chevy engine

I am helping my neighbor put a 1954 261 used engine in his 51' chevy pickup,the block had 3/8 pipe plugs in the oil galleys on the lower left side of block, the engine isn't getting any oil internaly when you spin the oil pump, do you have to pipe across these ports or install a full flow filter to get oil to the engine? thanks for any help,al
