The "newer" rear ends from the 60s will also be much tougher. If you did decide to go with a T5 I wouldn't be worried about strength unless its already been abused, the flathead V8 was very low powered compared to even the smog equipment choked 302s from the early 80s. Not to mention the MD50 (Mazda 5 speed) Ford used (still uses?) from 1987 on in the F150 was even lighter then the T5.
