Title for 46 KB5

I have a problem. I traded for a 1946 IH KB5 parcel delivery van (8 years ago), and the orginal owner could never find the title. NOW the man has passed away, and no one can find it yet. I would like to start working on installing it on a later model chassis, but would hate to have it finished, and then find out it belongs to someone else!! Does anyone have a answer? I live in NM and getting another title is nearly impossible. Thanks for any help........Bob
