The transfer case is a "full-time" unit, with an inter-axle differential. With EITHER the front or the rear driveshaft removed, it won't do anywhere until the 4X4 lever is put in the "LOC" position, either "HI" or "LO", which locks out the inter-axle differential.

If you can't get it into "LOC" which is either the front-most or rear-most position of the 4X4 shifter, spray the shifter full of penetrating oil, and try again.
