I've got a '78,'79 &'84 and the defrosters work just fine, you might check and see if some mice haven't plugged them up with something, also people tend to lay stuff on the dash and it will fall down into the defrosters and plug them up. They didn't get smart and start putting a screen over the openings till I think in the '80's.
