Re: Are Old trucks worth it? What would you do?Posted by Hal/WA on June 18, 2002 at 13:14:07 from (208.8.194.55): In Reply to: Are Old trucks worth it? If you want a cheap pickup for use around the farm, and also something that you can use as a second or third vehicle in a pinch, I would suggest a Ford, Chevy or Dodge from the 70's or 80's. Those pickups will do most jobs you ask them to and yet will go down the freeway all day at any speed limit and hold together. Unlike the 41, most parts can be obtained anywhere and are comparatively cheap. They are more complex than the 41, but most are still easy enough so you can work on them yourself. If you live in an area with snow or mud problems, a 4x4 might be the only vehicle that can get out under those conditions. I also like 3/4 tons for their greater hauling power, though the tires are more expensive and mileage is a little less from the heavier vehicle. Rust is what you really need to worry about in buying one of the pickups from that time period. Most other problems are pretty easy and cheap to fix. There are a lot of older pickups out there and if you look, you can find a good one that meets your needs for reasonable money.
