The leaf springs were an option on 67 - 72 Chevys, and standard on the 67 - 72 GMC trucks. I am unsure of the frame width though. I do know that the one shock is going to need some fabbing (look under and you'll see what I am talking about).
However, the coil set up that is in your truck is 10 times better than the one you are looking at. If you were to crawl under a bush car, you'd see pretty much the same thing. Also, the coils, when overloaded, they stack up on one another and act as lock out blocks almost. While the crappy leaves will crack and become extreamly dangerouse. (been there, done that)
What is wrong with your 72 to where it needs an axle? Can you just get the gears or bearings or what ever fixed?
As for cost, I'm willing to bet you could walk into a junk yard within 50 miles and get a complete rear for under 200 bucks that would bolt in. The 3.07 gears that you have (more likely than not) are the base equipment with all small block/automatic equipped trucks, so chances are, you will get the same gear. Onless you can verify this, you'd be best off getting the little plastic gears out of the tranny (asuming it is still in the truck) when you rape it for its rear.
E-mail me if you need any more info, or help locating one...I may be able to find one close to you, and even get it delivered.
