Wiring on a 84 C-60

Looks like I melted some wires in the steering collum on the 84 C-60, lots of smoke and the right rear blinker and stop light quit working.
From the looks of it I have to drop the steering collum to get the top plate off to show the wires. any place online to get some pics or instructions on how to drop the collum or get the cover off without doing that?
