Adam - I changed my 49 chevy to a rack and pinion. I did other mods, but it could be done with the existing suspenion. I did not use power, but you could use a power rack just as easily.

You can see I mounted the rack suspended from the frame behind the axle. If you go in front of the axle the shaft angles will be less severe.

Its just one idea you can consider. I am sure there are better ways to go. Just putting this one on the table.
