I doubt it is a 265 unless the block casting number is a GMC rather than the Chevy one. I have heard of a site called american classic truck parts.com that was to have a vin decoder but don't know if it works or is available yet. Do you believe the motor is an original motor? Short of taking the head of and measuring the stroke and bore, I am not sure on those since so many parts interchange. Maybe if you did a compression test a very high number would take the chance of a 283 out of the equation? Could be a 307 perhaps too I suppose. If you can take the oil pan off, you could look at the casting numbers and match that up for engine size maybe.
