How about cleaning out all you can.Put the cover back on.Fill it with kero or diesel fuel.Jack up and block rear or the truck and run it in gear for a while.Ya might have to do this a couple times,but I'm sure it will clean out most of that crapola.I'm sure that's 40 some year old gear lube that dried up.
