It was a carb'd engine... so maybe it was only the 365 HP version.... It was pulled from a vette & PUT in the truck by the truck's owner when the tag axle & bigger box was put on. Seems to Me it had a 4X4 or 5X4 transmission so there were PLENTY of low gears to get it moving. And it DID move. After IT blew a month or so after My cousin stopped driving for this guy it got replaced with a couple 175 HP truck engines. They blew up too because they had to run them wide open all the time. Horsepower is horsepower....Torque times RPM....200#/ft. of torque at 3000 RPM is the same HP as 600#/ft. of torque at 1000 RPM. You just need the gearing to be able to run the engine in it's powerband to make use of the HP. In this case, You needed the low gearing to make up for the lack of low RPM torque. And You probably know how important momentum is at maintaining speed in a 50,000# truck right? I used to haul readymix cement in a '66 White with 165 HP Cummins & a 5X4 transmission, full tandem 7 yrd mixer, 52,000# gross loaded... Going out of town if I could speed just a little thru the 30 mph speed zone I could be doing 60 or a little better 6-7 miles out of town on the S-curves. If I ran under 30 out of town I was still in 4th gear in the main augering thru the aux. trying to accelerate or hold speed up all the little hills... doing about 48-50 mph. The newer mixers with 210 HP and Allison 5 speed autos would be running 60-65 at the same point. WHAT a dfference a few more HP can make!
