catalytic converter question

I'm building I guess what you'd call a hotrod. Does the catalytic (sp) converter have to be close to the engine? And does it need to be where it can get free air circulation? I'm trying get my rig closer to the ground. Crossways on the backend would be a good place if it will work there. TIA
