Need Engine History Help

In selling off my auto/AC etc old-paper collection got hooked on the US independent engine mfr's (Buda, Cont,H-S,Herc,Wauk etc), but can't find anything really comprehensive as to what engine mk/mod went into what yr/make/mod trk,trctr,bus,const,ind'l, farm eqpmt,welders,gen's etc...pts cat'lgs, rep man's seem incomplete/contradictory...do any such books or manuals or whatever exist? Anyone have
any sugg's as to what to look/adv for??? any comments appreciated that don't refer to stupidity.
