you've most likely done this already but I'll mention it anyway. when i used to run a carburated vehicle out of gas I always had to pour a little down the carb to get engine to run long enough to get gas from tank to carb. otherwise you could run the battery down cranking it long enough to get fuel in carb. also check for leak between tank and pump. happened to an IH truck once i replaced fuel pump before i found it was sucking air from cracked rubber gas line. you could easily check for a leak if you have a vacuum pump.
