i have had problems with the bendixes on a few ford starters.there is a little fork that fits into a grove on the bendix. i have had the groove part break so that it either wouldnt engage or wouldnt disengage(depending on which side of the groove busted out) i also suspect that when you switched the bendix you didnt get the fork engaged properly in the slot. hope this helps. the first time i had this happen i ran to autozone and got a rebuilt. i later took apart the old one and found it to just have a cracked groove piece. i took one from another starter and fixed it. now that starter starts my 1936 caterpillar road grader, it has a ford 300 6 that i swaped into it
