There is a tin cover over the arm that kicks the bendix in. Take a hammer and flatten it right over the arm so it doesn't disengauge so far. Iv'e done it to quite a few Ford starters that did just what you described. You can even do it with the starter still on the motor. Hope this helps, old Ford driver Drill
