E-350 FORD TRANNY

I have a E-350 Ford bus converted to camper..it has 351 w motor with 3 speed auto...1988 model..I get 6 to 7 miles to gallon of gas. if I keep it down to 2000 rpm get more mpg..at 2000 I am running about 50 to 55 miles per hour..can I swap my tranny for a newer one with overdrive and what would fit with just a bolt in converson..some times I tow a trailor with antigue tractor can I use a newer tranny to tow with? thanks JR
