With a 6-Volt system, swapping in a 12-Volt coil won't "fry" anything but MAY give a weak spark.

12-Volt coil that needs an EXTERNAL resistor for 12-Volt use, used without the external resistor on 6-Volts will be very close, if not identical to a 6-Volt coil.

12-Volt coil that needs NO external resistor for 12-Volt use will have low primary current used on 6-Volts, and lower-than-normal output voltage.
