The local Chevy guy has restored a few of the 50's Chevys for guys who are still using them as intended. It isn't cheap, however..The main disadvantage to an older truck is the top speed is not going to be too fast....AS also there will be many creature comfort options missing.

Some folks will put an older cab on a modern one ton frame (Or larger depending on what they are hauling..)I wouldn't go any older than the 50's as the cabs are lots smaller if you go older.Check Street Rodder or one of the hot rod truck mags for ideas.

Probably the most cost effective way to haul your tractor would be a 70's truck. Those could come stock with highway gears, air conditioning, modern lighting, and a good V8. Parts can still be obtained in salvage yards, and they aren't so old as to be real fragile.

If you can stick with a one ton you will go faster and have better mileage. IF you are going for the modern conversion, a Super Duty will handle a bigger load.

GOod luck, sounds like fun!
