gas gauge

I have a '63 Chevy pickup on which the gas gauge worked until a few days ago. I half-filled the tank and after that, it reads max full all the time, regardless of how much fuel is in the tank. I know it gets power, as the gauge drops *slightly* when key is off, but pegs the meter when key is on. Any ideas?
