tranny problems?

ok ive got an 89 chevy 3/4 ton (6 lug) with a 350 and a 700R4 transmision and today i was gonna go into town and the thing wouldnt leave 2nd gear. i checked and its really low on tranny fluid could this be the problem or is the tranny shot. ive never had any thing slightly unnormal happen with the trans mission in the 4 months ive had it. any help woulkd be greatly appreciated also tomorrow ill do a filter and fluid change in it.
